The symposium aims at sharing information about the social science data archiving resources in East Asia, as well as on-going collaborative data collection activities in East Asia. We invite experts from China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Germany and ask them to provide us with the introduction to the current state of data resources and their availability in each nation.

Secondary Data Analysis Workshop
In order to promote the effective use of datasets in SSJDA, we select certain datasets that fit the year’s theme. Participants of the workshop will discuss their analyses of the data. At the end of the workshop, the participants will present their analyses at a conference, and publish a research paper series. All the research papers are written in Japanese.

Education and Training Program
We conduct a short-term training program on the statistical analysis and the basic use of the statistical software package. In 2007, we conducted two courses and one special lecture. The language of instruction for this program is Japanese.
1. Introduction to Secondary Analysis
Basic use of SPSS, descriptive statistics, cross-tabulation, and how to write a report
2. Quantitative Analysis Using Stata
Descriptive statistics, regression analysis, categorical data analysis, longitudinal and panel data analysis, and survival analysis using Stata
Special lecture: Theory and Application of Coefficients of Income DifferentialsThis training program is held at the beginning of March.
Excellent Paper Prize for Secondary Data Analysis in SSJDA
The Information Center for Social Science Research on Japan awards the annual Prize for Secondary Data Analysis to the great papers. This prize is donated by the Entertainment Business Institute, Ace Denken, and the Recruit Work Institute, which deposits datasets in SSJDA. This award can be given to students and young researchers affiliated with universities with exception of professors.
