Summary The purpose of this survey series is to grasp and provide basic data on the state of life insurance coverage among ordinary households and their conceptions of life insurance and of livelihood security against aging and for a surviving family. The series started in 1965 and, since then, surveys have been conducted regularly-about every three years. Two changes have been made in this survey, however. First, we changed the data collection method from the interview system to the record system, and, second, we reconsidered the survey content itself. We made the methodological change because we wanted to access the actual state of life insurance coverage within the household more accurately, to respond to the increased awareness of privacy protection, and to deal with the quantitative expansion of our questionnaire items. Major changes in the survey content are: (1) clarification of the concept of "special family policy"; (2) addition of a question asking spouse's insurance money as well as introduction of a different way of asking the amount; (3) addition of a question asking the daily amount paid during hospitalization due to sickness; (4) elimination of the "down payment" from the household's total amount of annual premiums paid; (5) clarification of whether the household uses or does not use a "conversion system" for private insurance policies purchased in recent past; (6) clarification of the purchasing channels of private life insurance policies purchased in resent past ; (7) clarification of the feeling of fulfillment/sufficiency with the amount of insurance money; (8) reconsideration of the overall composition of the questions regarding "views of livelihood security" to assure compatibility of each with the rest; and (9) change of questions directed to households intending new or additional coverage. In addition, some items have been eliminated from the questionnaire.
