Summary This survey was conducted in order to clarify the actual state of employment in companies and the companies' thoughts on employment in the current economic depression. Included are the contents of the restructuring undertaken by and the substance of adjustment in employment made by companies, and the ideas of the companies on how to deal with the depression in the future.

Major Survey Items (1) Trend of employment and the ways in which to deal with it: the number of regular workers and the rate of its increase/decrease (now, one year ago, 3 years ago), the reason behind the decrease in the number of regular workers, adjustments made by each division to deal with the decrease of regular workers, employment adjustment, how the increase/decrease in the number of workers are perceived (in different employment settings/ different divisions/ different age groups), changes made in the management of the employees (changes made in the past 3 years and those are to be made in the future).
(2) The current status in the reduction of regular workers: Current status of restructuring targeting regular workers, the relationship between the degree of decline in business and ongoing restructuring.
(3) Future outlook: Mid-term management plans including the prospect of the number of regular workers (whether the plans exist or not, whether the reduction of regular workers will take place or not/targeted fiscal year/ size of the reduction/ actual ways of operation), prospect of the number of employees in five years (in different employment settings/ divisions), percentage of numbers of workers in different employment settings (now and 5 years later), future hiring policies (hiring of students who are right out of school and those who are not), long-term employment practice.
(4) Abstract of companies: type of business, ratio of change in sales/rate of ordinary sales profit, number of current regular workers (in different divisions, different generation), number of irregular workers and dispatched workers (now, one year ago, 3 years ago).
