Summary The Japan Finance Corporation Research Institute has been conducting surveys in consideration of various viewpoints since 1969 in order to clarify the actual situation of new business start-ups, and since 1991, these survey results have been published annually as the "White Paper on New Business Start-ups." As of 2000, the survey excluded the real estate rental industry. All chronological data have been recounted to exclude real estate rental businesses.

Gender, age, highest level of educational attainment, occupation immediately before start-up, number of employees at the place of employment immediately before start-up, turnover form at the place of employment immediately before start-up

(3) Background of start-up
Motivation for opening a business, reason for deciding on the current type of business, breakdown of opening costs, breakdown of start-up funding sources, reasons for not receiving a loan from a private financial institution to cover start-up costs.

(4) Business conditions
Start-up year/age, breakdown of the number of employees at the time of start-up and the current number of employees, current performance (business conditions compared to other companies in the same industry, sales trend monthly sales, target monthly sales before start-up, profitability), current business obstacles, intent to go public in the future

(5) Opening plan
Participation in entrepreneurship seminars and workshops before start-up, items to consider with respect to start-up plans, basis for sales forecasts, the most important factors when selecting a start-up business location, people who offered advice during start-up plans/number of people, whether the start-up plan was well thought out, management considerations in case start-up plans do not proceed as anticipated, sales promotion (PR) activities at the time of start-up, degree of match between expected customer group before start-up and the current customer group, etc.
