Summary The purpose of this survey, entitled "Survey on the Actualities of Pachinko Participation, 2006," is to identify the current and future state of pachinko and pachislots as the performance of game machines is undergoing major changes due to the July 2004 revision of the National Public Safety Commission rules.

Additionally, for the purpose of collecting data that can serve as basic information for future policymaking in the gaming industry, the survey is conducted on an annual basis and subject to chronological analysis.

The new standard pachinko machine was first unveiled in November 2004, and while models with unprecedented gambling functions have now appeared, players have widely accepted new game features such as the so-called sudden change function.

With regard to pachislot, a model involving play using pachinko balls (“parrot”) has now appeared indicating new possibilities for pachislot, but the rollout of pachislot machines using conventional medals was delayed due to type conformity testing. At the time of this survey (2005), no such model had appeared on the market since early August.

In view of the environment in which parlors exist, although the number of parlors is decreasing, parlor size is steadily increasing, and competition for opening parlors is intensifying between local and national chains.

In this survey, the types of players were classified according to their characteristics for the first time in five years and analyzed and then compared with the survey conducted in summer 2001.

The questionnaire was conducted on a nationwide scale, and the mail survey was conducted in two stages: a [screening survey] and a [main survey]. These surveys also characterized the actual state of play among players and the awareness and structure of the segment of dormant players who are not currently playing. These surveys also placed focus on players’ expectations and awareness of their pachinko/pachislot play, their intent to play in the future, and their reasons for not playing.
