Summary To build an enduring society where everybody feels worthwhile and can enjoy a peaceful and fulfilling life in a truly aging society, it is important that each individual citizen participate in and cooperate with local communities. The participation of the elderly, in particular, should be sought to make use of their accumulated experience and skills.

It has been the viewpoint of this survey, also conducted in 1988, 1993, and 1998 for the purpose of contributing to the promotion of future measures the aging society through understanding attitudes of the elderly toward participation in local community.

The main survey items are (1) environment for participating in the local community, (2) actual situation of and attitudes to social participation activities,(3) thoughts on local activities,and (4) actual situation of and attitudes to intergenerational interactions.

Major Survey Items (1) Environment for participating in local community
Years at residence,frequency of going out,degree of interaction with neighbors,presence of close friends/ acquaintances,relationship with close friends or acquaintances,role of the elderly in family life, way of spending time when not working or doing housework,necessary conditions to actively engage in hobbies, etc., state of using information devices

(2) Actual situation of and attitudes to social participation activities
Participating activities, form of activities, activities of greatest interest, frequency of participation in activities of greatest interest, first time respondent participated in activities of greatest interest, reasons for participating in activities of greatest interest, what is good in general about participating in activities, reasons for not participating in activities, intention to participate in community activities, activity respondent wishes to participate in the future, reasons for wanting to participate in activities, groups involved in, groups of particular interest, state of participation in learning activities, whether or not respondent is interest in NPO activities, retirees’ involvement in community, key to improving welfare

(3) Thoughts on local activities
Necessary conditions to engage in community activities, the most necessary condition to engage in community activities, necessary social infrastructure to make community activities more vibrant, securing funds for running community activities, securing most desired funds for running community activities, thoughts on compensation for community activities, involvement of government and municipalities in community activities by the elderly, requests for government/municipalities regarding elderly’s participation in community activities

(4) Actual situation of and attitudes to intergenerational interactions
Whether or not opportunities exist to interact with younger generations, people to interact with, intention to participation in interactions with younger generations, details of interactions with younger generations participated in, reasons for not wanting to participate in interactions with younger generations, necessary conditions to promote intergenerational interactions, degree that respondent feels ikigai (life is worthwhile (joy and fun)), when ikigai is felt (life feels worthwhile (joy and fun))

(5) Attributes
Gender, age, form of cohabitation, health status, state of long-term care level, effects on daily life, whether or not respondent has a job, current occupation, job details, longest-held occupation, means of transportation, financial situation and living conditions
