Summary This survey was conducted before and after the Lower House election of 2009 using a public opinion poll on computers (CASI method) and a regular interview survey using paper questionnaires (PAPI method), with the purpose of clarifying the political behavior, social consciousness, and political attitudes of voters in the Lower House election through a two-wave national opinion poll (panel survey).

The survey items include “voting and political participation,” “expectations for society and politics,” “attitudes towards supporting political parties and policy issues in the election,” “knowledge and evaluation of politics,” “attributes of the subject,” etc.

In addition, this research group has been conducting national opinion polls on a continuous basis, mainly during national elections, since 2003. The survey period and survey names of each survey are as described below.

Each conducted simultaneously for the pre- and post-election survey for the 2009 Lower House election.

- Recognition of the importance of elections, attitude toward this (2009) Lower House election, thoughts on the relationship between citizens and election/politics, plan for voting (single-seat electoral district and proportionally represented district), vote in the previous (2005) Lower House election

- Candidate and party voted for in the Lower House election (candidate in a single-seat electoral district and party in a proportionally represented district), timing for deciding whom to vote for, canvassing from candidates/parties

- Opinion on politics, political position (conservative or progressive), trust in various organizations/groups/institutions, trust in others, the goals of Japan in the next ten years

(4) Political participation
- Voting/running as a candidate/assisting a campaign during election, political party activities, contacts and communications with national Diet members/local assembly members, participation in protests and rallies, referendums, etc.

(5) Affiliation to organizations and groups, canvassing from groups to vote
- Residents’ associations/neighborhood associations, PTAs, fellow trading member association, labor unions, Co-ops/consumer organizations, volunteer organizations, resident movement organizations, religious organizations, etc.
