Summary This survey was carried out through the collection of survey data on the subjective perceptions of social distance that people possess with respect to a variety of occupations, to delineate distances and cognitive constructs relating to such.

This survey received the following grant: Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (2012-2014, Basic Research (C),Lead Researcher: Takuya Hayashi, Research Theme Number: 24530625).

A screening survey that enquired only about occupational attributes was conducted, resulting in the collection of 28,468 cases. Subsequently, the number of surveys to be distributed was divided on the basis of gender, age, and occupation, and surveys were distributed with the aim of meeting the newly set response target for all groups (total of 2,000 cases).

Current occupation, father's occupation and business/industry were coded post-survey, based on the open-ended responses. An automatic coding system provided by the University of Tokyo Center for Social Research and Data Archives was utilized in the coding of occupation/industry information. After using the automatic coding system to filter candidate codes, the work to confirm the final codes was carried out by the lead researcher, collaborating researcher, and graduate students employed as part-time workers.
