Summary The purpose of this survey was to provide basic statistical data by gaining an understanding of chronological shifts in people’s attitudes to life security, with a focus on the actual state of enrollment in life insurance in common households. This survey has been conducted by the Life Insurance Association of Japan almost once every three years since 1965. It was handed over to the Japan Institute of Life Insurance following its foundation in 1976. The method of this survey was changed and its content was revised in 1988, and some minor revisions have been made since then.

The main survey items are as follows. Since the last survey (1070), survey items on knowledge about life insurance and personal pension insurance have been added.
(1) State of enrollment in life insurance (private life insurance, Kanpo insurance, postal insurance, JA, prefectural mutual aid/co-op, etc.)
(2) State of enrollment in personal pension insurance and pension-type products
(3) State of enrollment in private life insurance with specific coverage and riders
(4) Life insurance (private insurance) enrolled in recently (2013 or later)
(5) Cancellation/expiration of private life insurance policies
(6) Sufficiency of coverage
(7) Thoughts on life security
(8) Intention to enroll in life insurance in the future
(9) Knowledge about life insurance
(10) Experience with long-term care/actual state of long-term care use

- Use for cancellation refund, reasons for terminating, etc.

(6) Sufficiency of coverage
- Sufficiency of insurance coverage, premiums payable each year

(7) Thoughts on life security
- Preparation for life protection/intention to prepare (head of household/spouse/children)
- protection in case something happens to the head of household, protection in case the head of household is hospitalized for two to three months
- protection for respondent’s and spouse’s life in old age, protection in case the head of household or spouse requires long-term care
- Protection in case the head of household becomes unable to work
- Thoughts on the balance between public and private security, etc.

(8) Intention to purchase life insurance in the future
- Route of purchase of the life insurance or personal pension insurance in the future
- Whether or not respondent intends to purchase, reason for not intending to purchase, Person to be insured, type of life insurance
- Thoughts on the types of life insurance premiums deductions (general life insurance premiums deduction system, long-term care medical insurance premiums deduction system, and personal pension insurance premiums deduction system), intention to enroll or continue
- Inheritance tax exemption on death benefits and intention to enroll or continue
- Intention to enroll in/reasons for selecting private life insurance and Kanpo life insurance, etc.

(9) Knowledge about life insurance
- Knowledge respondent perceives as insufficient (how life insurance and private pension insurance work, what kind of coverage is needed, etc.)
- Self-awareness of knowledge level (sufficient/hardly enough knowledge)

(10) Experiences with and actual state of caregiving
Experience of long-term care in the past three years, period and place of long-term care, use of public long-term care insurance services, cost of long-term care
