Summary This survey has been conducted every autumn since 1963, with the aim of clarifying university students' lifestyles, mainly the economic aspects, as well as their attitudes and behaviors. The research findings based on the survey results inform co-operatives’ activities and projects, with the ultimate goal of further enriching university students’ lives. This survey was conducted in 2018 and is the fifty-fourth of its kind.
The results of this survey show that in an increasing number of cases, students’ part-time jobs are significant sources of incomes, as they do not expect an increase in the amount of money they receive from their families and tend to avoid scholarship loans. Although students are busy with their studies, clubs, and part-time jobs, a record high of nearly 60% described their living conditions as "easy."
Additionally, social networking services (SNS), a tool for maintaining social relationships, are also being used to learn about the social situation at home and abroad. However, while many students are actively gathering information, including from the mass media, the percentage of students who are interested in politics and social issues has not exceeded a certain number in recent years, and it has become clear that not many students feel that Japan’s future is "bright."
