Summary
|
The purpose of this survey is to regularly ascertain workers' perceptions of economic trends, work, and life in Japan through questionnaire surveys and to obtain basic data for examining various policy issues aimed at improving workers' lives.
Since the first survey was conducted in April 2001, it has been conducted regularly every April and October, with the main aim of ascertaining the work and life situations and perceptions of a diverse range of workers. From the 21st survey (conducted in April 2011), the survey method was switched from the conventional postal monitor survey to an Internet survey to expand the number of survey participants.
In addition, this 35th survey (conducted in April 2018) expanded the target area to cover the whole country, and the sample size was increased to more accurately grasp and analyze workers' actual work and life situations.
In addition to the regular survey items (e.g., workers' perceptions of the economic situation, prices, and work), the 39th survey also included semi-regular survey items (April regular survey items) on "recent household economic conditions" and "awareness of medium-term prospects." In addition, there were specific topics on "trust in the social security system, awareness of benefits and burdens," and an emergency survey on "the impact of the new coronavirus infection on employment and income."

Sampling Procedure
|
Non-probability: Quota
1. Based on the pre-assumed sample size of 2,000 people, a sample allocation standard was created that reflected the distribution ratio by gender, age class strata, and type of employment of employees aged 20 to 64 in the Tokyo metropolitan area (Saitama, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa) and Kansai area (Shiga, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo, Nara, Wakayama) of the “2017 Employment Status Survey”.
2. Based on the sample allocation criteria for the Tokyo metropolitan area and Kansai region described above, a national sample allocation criteria was created, resulting in a target number of 4,307 people. Based on the same allocation criteria, a random sample was selected from among private-sector employees living throughout Japan who are registered as monitors with INTAGE Research Inc. to ensure that the number of responses for each stratum was equal to or greater than the allocation criteria and they were asked to respond to the questionnaire.
3. From the responses received, a random sample was selected to ensure that the number of samples for each demographic was equal to the quota.
*INTAGE Research monitors are mainly recruited through advertisements on the Internet, newspapers, and magazines.
