Summary
|
The purpose of this survey is to grasp where Japanese society is moving toward, using the relationship between class and social consciousness as a clue. Using the CAPI (Computer Assisted Personal Interview) method, we aim to serve as a pioneering model for CAPI surveys in academic research in Japan.

Sampling Procedure
|
Probability: Stratified
Probability: Multistage
Stratified three-stage random sampling. The first sampling unit is the municipality, the second sampling unit is the town, street, etc. (based on those used in the sub-regional tabulation of the national census), and the third sampling unit is the individual. The electoral rolls were used as the sampling registers (for municipalities that the electoral rolls could not sample, the basic resident registers were used).

Mode of Data Collection
|
This survey uses the Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) method, which involves using a computer (tablet terminal) to conduct an individual interview with the surveyor. Two terminals were used, one for the surveyor and one for the respondent.
Interviews were controlled by "Ques Android" [for the surveyor] and "Ques Android (for Respondents)" [for the respondent's terminal] in the CCAST system, an application running on Android developed by Survey Hackers, LLC (now MS Hackers, LLC). In principle, the surveyor read aloud the questions displayed on the surveyor's terminal, the respondent selected an option from a list of options displayed on the synchronized respondent's terminal and responded orally, and the surveyor recorded the response on the terminal. However, if the respondent wishes, he or she can tap the screen of the respondent's terminal and select his or her answer. The two terminals are synchronized so that the responses are recorded on the surveyor's terminal, and the respondent can also view his/her responses on the respondent's terminal at the same time.
For questions related to personal income and household income, the respondents themselves input their answers by operating their own terminals instead of being asked verbally by the surveyor so that the surveyor does not know their answers.
