Summary Japanese companies are in the midst of a drastic structural change due to globalization, the growth of service industry in the economy and the development of technological innovations and informational technology. Each company's enforcement of its main business, review of its management strategies and its organizational change seem to have a big effect on the management of labor and hiring. This survey was conducted in order to clarify the impact of the revision of the companies' management strategies and the organizational change that follows them would have on employment.

Sampling Procedure Companies with 100~499 employees were randomly sampled. Companies with more than 500 employees were entirely sampled.

(1) Management strategies of the company (in the past 5 years and the next 5 years); (2) organizational change corresponding the management strategies (in the past 5 years and the next 5 years, reasons for establishing sub-companies); (3) ways to secure labor; ways to supply and adjust labor; type of the labor supplied (regular workers/non-regular workers); ways to supply regular workers; reasons for hiring workers from outside the company; (4) development of new business; areas and types of business to be embarked; situation of the advancing business (growing, maintaining, shrinking) ; reasons for developing new business; percentage of employees involved in the new business developed in the past 5 years; the outlook in the next 5 years of those who are involved in the new business developed in the past 5 years; (5) venture business system within the company; the extent to which it is introduced; objectives; abstract of the system (time of introduction, use of the system, evaluation, future management policy); (6) tasks faced regarding business development and employment.
Demographic items:
type of business (main business, others); year of establishment; sales; situation of the group of which the company is apart; number of employees (current, difference between the numbers 5 years ago, the outlook in the next 5 years).
