Summary This survey was executed as one of seven sub-projects in the frame of the first medium-term research project of the German Institute for Japanese Studies on value change in Japan. The general topic of the research project was the change of values of individualism and equality in the family and in work life. This topic also was the focus in the construction of the questionnaire for this survey. The questionnaire covers various topics on value consciousness of the Japanese in work and family life including individuality and attitudes in the office, equality in gender, house work sharing, child education, marriage, etc.

Two-stage stratified random sampling.
The respondents were drawn at random from the resident registers (jumin-daicho).
Mode of Data Collection The method of the survey were oral interviews of individuals executed by interviewers using a standardized questionnaire.
