Summary Since 1969, the Research Institute of National Life Finance Corporation has conducted surveys from various viewpoints in order to investigate how new start-ups are actually doing. The Institute has been publishing "White Paper on New Start-ups," which contains the results of the surveys, annually since 1991. The survey of real estate renting business has been excluded since 2000, and all chronological data have been re-produced excluding real estate renting business.

Major Survey Items (1) Company outline : type of industry, contents and feature of enterprises (New points, fulfills the SOHO or not, existence of franchise chain affiliation), a management form (at the time of commencement-of-business and now), the office is owned or not, and adress of the office.
(2) Manager: sex, age, the last school education, occupation just before the commencement of business (the number of employees, whether listed on the big board or not, job description, whether respondent had held a job in the same area, comparison with present income, salary form, comparison with present working hour, existence of experience of telecommuting).
(3) Circumstances of commencement of business: whether respondent had held a job in the same area as side job, the commencement-of-business motive, reason decided to be the present enterprise, time of commencement-of-business years, age at the time of commencement-of-business, process and the most serious consideration matter which is in charge of commencement of business, commencement-of-business expense, financing.
(4)Family and employee: employee at the time of commencement-of-business and now, the consort working or not, monthly salaries other than business, cohabitation family other than consort (the number of family members, participation in business, number of family members who are doing work other than business and total of monthly salary), incomes of the participants other than business, cost of living a month of home, working hour of the participant and family employed person each day, working situation of the participant (main office, time change of working hour, Self-discretion level of working time zone, number of holidays a month.
(5) The situation after commencement of business: main customer, ratio that occupies it to the entire sales of maximum orderer, presence of order from former company and the ratio, the customer fixed or not, content of business income, achievement (business condition compared with other companies in the same area, trend of sales, present monthly turnover, target monthly turnover at the time of commencement of business, income-and-outgo situation, period when business overcame deficits, gross profit of monthly average), degree of satisfaction to the situation of the present achievement, degree of satisfaction to the situation of the quality of commodity and service.
(6) Consideration to business: point of the most much valuing in running business, future enterprise deployment intention and reason why participants don't want to expand business, consideration to employee (Advantage in which business is done only in participant (and family), intention whether to employ people other than family in the future and reason why participants don't want to employ), intention of succession of business and successor's presence, presence of sense of resistance to job change or giving up business and the reason, presence of sense of resistance to be employee and the reason, stock public presentation.
(7) Consideration to life and how to work: purpose of working, degree of satisfaction to the life (income, property, leisure, work, richness of mind, all aspects of life), comparison with employers of the same generation (income, composure, sense of satisfaction, position, way of life).
