| Summary |
The eruption of Miyake-jima in 2000 forced all residents of the island to evacuate, and their desire to return was not realized until 4 and a half year years later in February 2005. There are no other examples in Japan of island residents having to part with their beloved hometown because of a disaster and to live in evacuation facilities for as long. This survey is the fourth (2008) in a series of surveys conducted using the same method in April each year from 2005, when the evacuation order covering all of Miyake-jima was lifted, to 2008, with the aim of comprehensive longitudinal research into how residents achieve recovery after experiencing off-island evacuation for as long as 4 and a half years. Further aims are to provide the survey results to disaster prevention institutions and others as the basic materials to understand the ongoing recovery of Miyake Village and to prevent public interest from fading by sharing the current state of the island with the society. The report summarizes the first to fourth surveys and discusses in concrete detail the realities of and progress in recovery. The main survey items this time are the state of people who have/have not returned to Miyake-jima, household budget/life, and the progress of recovery/islanders’ ways of life/thinking, etc. The data from the first three surveys are stored in SSJDA 0590–0592, and the first three reports are available on the Survey Research Center website. |

Complete survey of households (When the first survey was originally designed, area sampling was considered, but because of the lack of accurate information on the number of returnee households on Miyake-jima, the absence of a ledger for sampling, and the shortfall between the actual number of returnee households and predictions, we quickly switched to a complete survey.) All households that have returned to Miyake-jima as of April 19 to 23, 2008. *The following households are excluded: - Visitors to Miyake-jima from the mainland who were engaged in recovery-related enterprises - Temporary transfers from the mainland, such as from Miyake Branch Office - People who have moved to Miyake-jima since the eruption |
