Summary Recruit Works Institute has been planning and implementing a periodic and multifaceted survey of “the reality and consciousness of employment among working individuals,” which have been steadily changing in response to social and economic trends in recent years. This is the seventh survey of the series and was conducted in September 2012. The purpose is to clarify the reality and consciousness of working individuals in the Tokyo metropolitan area.

Since the sixth survey in the series, the method used comprises an Internet survey.

Universe Men and women aged 18 to 59 years (excluding students) who worked at least one day in the last week of August 2012 as regular employees, contract workers/employees on a short-term contract (shokutaku), dispatched workers (haken shain), part-timers/casual part-timers (arubaito), or outsourcing contractors in the Tokyo metropolitan area within a 50-kilometer radius (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, and Saitama prefectures).

Participants were divided into an employee group and part-timer group (see definition below), and were assigned to a group by gender, 5-year age group, and area.

The employee group comprises “regular employees and staff.”

The part-timer group comprises “contract workers/employees on a short-term contract (shokutaku),” “dispatched workers (haken shain),” “part-timers” “casual part-time workers (arubaito),” and “outsourcing contractors.”

Impetus to change jobs, reason for resigning from previous job, searching for a new job, attributes of previous employer/number of working days/ occupation type, etc.

Position, promotion speed, personnel changes, view of careers, intention to change jobs, desire to find a job in birthplace, intention to be independent, intention to work overseas, etc.

[Skills/learning behavior]
Skills acquired, utilization of non-working hours, educational institutions attended since entering the workforce, reading, meetings with a career consultant, etc.

[Work and careers]
Things respondent considers important when working, desired style of working, etc.

[Face items/way of thinking]
Existence of a spouse, age of first marriage, annual income (respondent/spouse), presence of children, cohabitants, head of household, highest level of educational attainment, academic grades in the third year of junior high school, parents’ highest level of educational attainment, self-perception, experience of living abroad, language skills in English and Asian languages, etc.
