Summary Due to such unexpected contingencies as the Hanshin quake and a sharp rise in the value of yen, 1995 negotiations for higher wages ended up in lowest rates ever despite an earlier observation that, as the economy had begun to recover, no condition for lower rates existed for this year than those settled for last year. In particular small- and medium-size manufacturers were hard hit by their parent companies' restructuring practices, engagement in overseas business, and cuts in unit prices--a phenomenon feared to help widen wage disparities. Against the backdrop, this research asks what factors have determined wage levels at smaller companies and to what extent the levels have been influenced by the wage hikes at large companies as well as by the kind of business relationships between the two types of companies including the unit price. The researcher's aim is to thereby provide findings helpful in considering the way wages at smaller companies is to be determined in the future.
