Summary This survey aims at clarifying the current state of promotion in the company by analyzing it from various angles as well as at searching the motivations and principles behind it. The questionnaire, directed at corporate directors, was conducted as one of the activities of Kyoto University's Executives Study Group which had been studying issues of corporate governance including promotion to directorship. In the survey, however, white-collar workers as a whole are evaluated and analyzed along with the Survey of White-collar Workers' Careers in which our Employment System Study Committee (headed by Toshiaki Tachibanaki) delved into issues involved in the promotion to and treatment of middle management by focusing on white-collar managers at the section level.
