Summary The viability of our national economy has long been maintained by a high metabolism in the small business sector. In recent years, however, the viability has been threatened by a decreasing number of new starters of small enterprises. To meet the conversely increasing need to study problems of starting a small enterprise and their possible solutions, the Research Institute of National Life Finance Corporation began not only to accumulate data on new start-ups but also to conduct a series of surveys to grasp their current situation by assigning a specific theme to each. This 1993 survey is the 8th one, and its focus is on the manufacturing industry. We gave both a questionnaire and an interview (by visiting ) to 34 of the new starters surveyed here.
Universe A total of 6,440 companies which were, among other companies financed by NLFC between April and September, 1992, either within one year of opening or before opening at the time of financing. Establishments by means of split were excluded.
