Summary Since 1963 we have conducted an annual survey in October for the purpose of realizing a fuller campus life by clarifying, in particular, the economic life of university students as well as their consciousness and activities, and by making the findings reflect on our business and various activities. This 1996 survey, the 32nd of the kind, indicates that while the student life seems to have finally escaped from a prolonged recession as the earnings from part-time work recovered, the severe "employment problem" is still there and anxieties about securing a job now extend down to the freshmen/women and sophomores. The survey reveals the way in which university students manage to make time and money under the condition of having a number of things they must and want to do while a student.
Universe A total of 35,742 students were sampled from 77 universities nationwide, and, for national aggregation, the students who attend pre-selected 29 universities were chosen from the day-time student cohorts of the original sample.

Sampling Procedure We gave each university a sampling ratio in accordance with the number of undergraduate students, and sampled from their ID numbers at regular intervals.
Mode of Data Collection Questionnaires were mailed and partially handed to the respondents. The mailing as well as collecting was done by each cooperative.

Major Survey Items Demographic items: department; year; sex and marital status; entrance exam; experience of waiting till next entrance exam period after failing in one; type of dwelling, layout, and area; means of transportation to school; and commuting time.
I Economic life:
Present and future financial outlook; earning and spending measures; breakdown of monthly earnings and expenses; special spending in past six months and future six months; and part-time work in past six months, earnings, their use, and type of work.
II Consumption behavior:
Driver's license, period obtained, place of application, and plans to get within a year; overseas trips made, number of trips, agency used, future plans, destinations, purpose, etc.; degree of confidence in conversational skills in foreign language and intentions for mastering; PC and word processor held, and plans for purchase; and meals in a day, eating place, etc.
III Daily life and activities:
Daily life (days spent on campus per week; waking and sleeping time; arriving and leaving time; number of classes attended today, hours spent on reading per day; and important areas of campus life);and consciousness and activities in daily life (48 items) (study, socialization with faculty and other students, socialization with friends, consumption, health maintenance, dietary life, level of interest in environmental issues, level of interest in social problems, Internet, volunteer activities, employment, impression of university-favorable or not, degree of fulfillment in student's life, etc.).
IV Use of Co-ops:
Book Store (Shoseki-bu)(frequency of use in past month, and evaluation); General Store (Kobai-bu) (frequency of use in past month, recognition and image of Co-op products, evaluation, and important characteristics); Cafeteria (weekly frequency of use, and favorable characteristics and areas for improvement); and attitudes to Co-ops (recognition of Conference of Delegates, recognition of Opinion Card, participation in the operation, recognition of mutual-aid enterprise, Co-op News, level of interest in and recognition of peace issues; Co-op's UNICEF fund-raising; closeness/familiarity, degree of satisfaction, and overall evaluation).
V Others:
Parents' occupation and annual income; hospitalization and visits to doctor in past six months; etc.
