Summary Today, information related industries that deals with letters, pictures, illustrations, and programs, are changing rapidly, due to the rapid progress of the IT (Information Technology). Many middle and small size companies are involved in these industries, and each company, in the midst of IT Revolution, is facing a change in its business environment. This survey aims to investigate the current situation of these companies, which produces "information" as products, the new style of transaction between the companies, and management tasks.

Universe Companies whose type of business belong to the following categories: publishing/print, software, information processing services, design, film/video making.

Sample Size 12,364 companies. 3,938 (31.9%) of them returned effective responses.

Major Survey Items (1) Abstract of the company: age and sex of the managers; number of employees; average age and average years of service of the regular workers; form of business; year of foundation; main work place; original web site; annual sales in comparison with the annual sales of the previous year; contents of the jobs; use of information devices; nature of business.
(2) Relationship with the recipient of the order: number of the customer- enterprise in comparison to the number of the previous year; contents of the order, way to secure order; name and location of the customers; ways of making arrangements with the customers; ways of customer developing; transaction with the customers in comparison to the transaction made 5 years ago with the same customers.
(3) Relationship with the sender of the orders: contents of order; number of the companies to whom orders were sent in comparison to the number of the previous year; size of the companies; location of the companies; ways of making arrangements with the companies; form of contract between the companies; use of SOHO; organization of project teams with the companies; ways to secure companies to whom orders could be made out; selection criteria used to select companies with whom orders will be placed; transaction with the companies in comparison to the transaction made 5 years ago with the same costomers.
(4) Managerial tasks to be confronted and future business policies: Current managerial tasks; requests to banks; principles in setting the scope of the business; employee hiring policies; future policies of the in-taking jobs; future increase/decrease of the companies to whom orders are made out.
