| Summary | RENGO's "Survey of Life" has been conducted every other year since in 1988, and it has become a basic data essential to forming agenda and requests for the "Spring Life Struggle (Shunto)." The survey serves for the purpose to seek the union members' reality of life and their feelings for life under a situation where the union members' needs and concerns is diversifying. This year's survey was conducted for the purpose of understanding the situation and realities of life and workplace of the union members, which is necessary to advance the 2001 Shunto. Using some of the search items used in the past, this survey tries to investigate whether union members feel "quality, richness and social justice" in their lives and, if not, the reason. It also tries to find out what kind of life style union members wish to pursue. This time as well as last time questionnaires were distributed to medium and small-sized unions through regional unions under RENGO. |

Demographics: Type of business of the enterprise the respondent works for; number of employees; (those who work for private companies) sales of the company; wage and personnel management; fixed working hours; holidays; sex; age; years of working; educational history; form of hiring; type of job; composition of the household; numbers of household members and children; income source of the household; residence; type of housing; experiences of being a board member of the union. Survey Items: (1) Household budget: the respondent's total annual wage, in comparison with last year's total annual wage; satisfaction with the total annual wage; fixed wages of June 2000 and June 1999; income of the household, in comparison with last year's income of the household; income and expenditure of family budget; this year's expenditure for consumption in comparison with the last year's expenditure for consumption, reasons for spending less; a lump sum allowance necessary for maintaining everyday life and preferable allowance. (2) Job and conditions of employment: time management; hours of overtime work in June 2000, in comparison with the overtime work in June 1999; overtime work without pay; numbers of paid vacation days actually used in 1999; what the respondent expect of the trade union regarding reduction of working hours; self-evaluation and treatment; satisfaction in performance appraisal; recent employment adjustment in the workplace; effect of restructuring; whether there is disparate treatment against female workers, whether discrimination has been corrected in the past few years; anxiety the respondent has for the workplace. (3) Life after 60 years of age: evaluation of the amended Pension Law; whether the respondent has life plans for after becoming 60; images of life and work life after 60; things the respondent is worried about in his retired life. (4) Life related services: Life related services and things concerning the environment the respondent wish to be realized; difficulties in receiving health service; problems concerning children and education; life style (7 items); participation in NPO activities and volunteer work; things the respondent expect of the union; satisfaction in current life. |
