Summary Since 1969, the Research Institute of National Life Finance Corporation has conducted surveys from various viewpoints in order to investigate how new start-ups are actually doing. The Institute has been publishing "White Paper on New Start-ups," which contains the results of the surveys, annually since 1991. The survey of real estate renting business has been excluded since 2000, and all chronological data have been re-produced excluding real estate renting business.

A total of 9,720 companies which were, among others the NLFC financed between April and September, 2002, either less than one year old or before opening at the time of financing.

Major Survey Items (1) Company outline : type of industry, change and addition of the contents of enterprises, business place, a management form (at the time of commencement-of-business and now), reason to select the management form, franchise chain affiliation (existence of franchise chain affiliation, reason, evaluation to affiliation.
(2) Manager: sex, age, the last school education, occupation just before the commencement of business (the number of employees, presence of work experience as regular member and number of companies, working years, whether respondent had held a job in the same area and the working years), type of industry that participant worked as employee, occupation just before the commencement of business (the number of employees, whether listed on the big board or not, unemployment form, comparison with present income).
(3) Circumstances of commencement of business: whether respondent's parents had held a job, reason to commence the business without succeeding parents' businesses, the commencement-of-business motive, time of commencement-of-business years, age at the time of commencement-of-business, age which aimed at the entrepreneur first, age which aimed at the entrepreneur first, reason decided to be the present enterprise, means of acquiring business seeds, points insufficient as manager and supplementation method,entrepreneur seminar and course (participating situation, whether it was useful or not, and the reason), commencement-of-business expense, financing.
(4) Family and employee: employee at the time of commencement-of-business and now, work of which participant takes charge directly, partner in management (partner's presence, relation to partner, role), situation of family and income (incomes of the participants from business and other than business, cohabitation family, consort's occupation and annual income, annual income of cohabitation family other than consort).
(5) Management situation etc.: point of the most much valuing in running business, points that are newer than the other companies, strong point in running business, ratio that occupies it to the entire sales of maximum orderer, method of acquiring customer, use of the Internet and E-mail (use by business, purpose of use, effect on business), achievement (business condition compared with other companies in the same area, trend of sales, present monthly turnover, target monthly turnover at the time of commencement of business, income-and-outgo situation), management of financial deficit, managerial problem point, degree of satisfaction to be a manager, dissatisfied reason, management vision in the future, effective support to the commencement of business.
