Summary This survey was conducted in an attempt to uncover the reality and consciousness of employment among business people working in Metropolitan areas. The survey specifically investigates their attitude to switch jobs and develop their careers.
Universe Employees of private firms and public agencies, including full-time, contract, temporary, and part-time staff, aged 18-59 years, and working in the Metropolitan area within a 50-kilometer radius (Tokyo Metropolis and the Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, and Ibaraki Prefectures) (excluding students)

Spatial Unit Metropolitan area within a 50-kilometer radius (Tokyo Metropolis and the Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, and Ibaraki Prefectures)
Sampling Procedure Area sampling
Employees were divided into two groups-a firm/agency staff group and part-time staff group-and allocated according to their sex and a five-year age group. The firm/agency staff group includes full-time, contract, and temporary employees. The part-time staff group includes part-time employees. An employee is defined as a person who has worked for more than one day by the end of July 2004.
Mode of Data Collection Questionnaires for the self-report were distributed by visiting the companies.

Questionnaire items:

(1) Working style (employment status): Employment status, degree of satisfaction with current employment status, desirable employment status, and acceptance of current employment status.

(2) Current employer and workplace: Year/month and age when employed by current employer, reasons for selecting current employer, capital, industry, number of employees, working hours per week, rule for applying the concept of overtime work, total hours of overtime work per week, paid work out of total hours of overtime work per week, current occupation, years of experience in current occupation, managerial position, factors affecting compensation, rate of overall satisfaction with current employer, evaluation of current workplace, and rate of overall satisfaction with current workplace.

(3) Working style after graduation to date: Experienced employment status, working period, non-working period, and activity during non-working periods.

(4) Experience and number of times R resigned/switched a job: Experience and number of times R resigned/switched jobs, intention behind switching jobs and job switching activity in the past, number of times R intended to switch jobs, reasons behind intending to switch jobs, reasons for turnovers, voluntary turnovers, and order of turnover and determination of new employer.

(5) Working style prior to job switch and previous employer: Occupation prior to job switch, number of employees at previous employer, working hours per week at previous employer, occupation prior to and after job switch, annual compensation prior to and after job switch, and presence or absence of employment insurance.

(6) Working style and job switch in the future: Intention for job switch and job switching activity, occupation that R wants to switch to, obstacles in the job switch, wish to switch to jobs in rural areas, intention to be independent in the future, strength of intention to be independent, style of independence, intention to conduct a side business, reason for conducting a side business, and anxiety toward unemployment.

(7) Consciousness for ability, skill, and learning behavior: Required ability, current capability, developing ability, ability that R wants to improve, necessity of certification, efforts for self-education within the last one month (method of self-education, time spent in self-education, and expenditure on self-education), areas that R wants to study, professional areas, age when selecting a professional area, meaning/value of work, age at which was R able to explain the meaning/value of work, others' recognition of R's expertise, self-recognition of R's expertise.

Face items:
Sex; age; spouse; if spouse is employed; if R has children, number of children and age of youngest child; housemates; education; department of school that R graduated from; experience in dropping out of school; annual compensation; and pay system.
