Summary
|
This survey was conducted to examine public awareness concerning the experience of being a victim of crime, anxiety about becoming a victim of crime, local public safety and prevention measures, and so on. It was conducted with the objective of providing the basic materials for establishing crime prevention measures based on public awareness and demand. Simultaneously, the survey aims to examine crime-related problems that are urgent at the time, and, on this occasion, it looks at juvenile delinquency and crime committed by foreign nationals in Japan.
Furthermore, this survey is conducted periodically to understand the interim changes in public awareness of crime anxiety and other related issues. The first survey was conducted in 2002, and this is the second survey.

Sampling Procedure
|
Probability: Systematic random
Probability: Stratified
Probability: Multistage
Two-stage stratified random sampling method
First, we divided Japan into five regions based on urban scale, then selected 150 locations that well represent the whole Japan in terms of region and scale. From each location, 16 to 17 people were sampled using systematic sampling (sampling at regular intervals) from the Basic Resident Register. In the areas in which the Basic Resident Register was not available to the public to see, people were sampled on site.
|
Mode of Data Collection
|
Self-administered questionnaire: Paper
The survey was conducted by mailing a “survey request” postcard to sampled survey subjects in advance and then afterward by having survey staff visit survey subjects, ask them to fill out the forms themselves, and then collect the forms on the date subjects specified.
