Summary
|
For a long time, Japan has had an established reputation as a country with stable and strong public safety. However, in the recent years, that reputation is starting to waver because of the changes in societal and international conditions. The concerned issues include the actual rise in number of offenses and (within that category) the increase in the number of crimes committed by young people, who are the future of Japan, and the decreasing crime clearance rate. These negative trends have also been observed in the physical sense of public safety and the extent to which citizens understand the threat of crimes based on their experiences.
Based on these conditions, this survey examines public awareness concerning the anxiety of crime victimization, juvenile delinquency/crime, changes in the physical sense of public safety, and crime prevention measures. It was conducted with the objective of providing the basic materials for understanding people’s awareness of public safety. The same type of survey will be conducted periodically in the future to consider through quantitative research the changes in people’s perceptions of public safety.
This survey was carried out as a part of the 66th SJCPOLL by the Shin Joho Center, Inc.
