Summary
|
This survey, entitled "Survey on Education Costs and Family Finances," has been conducted since 1993 for households that have been issued a national education loan.
Until 2003, it was compiled as the "Survey on Household Budgets among Families with Pre-college Students," but since its 2004 iteration, it has been compiled as the "Survey of the Actual Burden of Educational Expenses in Households.” The main purpose of this survey is to clarify the actual situation of the burden of educational expenses on the household budget of households with school-age children, but in addition to educational expenses, household income, mortgage status, and methods of securing funds to cover educational expenses were also surveyed to explore the overall picture of the household budget and the relationship between the household budget and educational expenses.
The characteristics of this survey are: (1) it covers households nationwide in Japan (households with working people), (2) it only covers households with school-age children, (3) it considers educational expenses throughout the year, and (4) it assesses the burden of educational expenses by classifying the number of children in school, the type of school they attend, and whether they commute from home.
