Summary
|
This survey was conducted for the purpose of understanding married/childrearing men’s and women’s attitudes to the declining birthrate and gender equality to be looked at by the “special survey group on declining birthrate and gender equality.” It specifically focuses on the relationship between the actual situation of and attitudes to male and female work styles and promotion of work-life balance in the workplace and how state of promotion of work-life balance in the workplace affect job efficiency and work motivation. Mitsubishi Research Institute, Inc. was commissioned to conduct this survey.

(1) State of declining birthrate and gender equality
- Level of safety/stability of the community in which respondent lives, state of improving social environment to make childrearing easy in the community, system of cooperating in local community for childrearing and youth development, sense of financial burden of child rearing, attitudes to financial independence in the community
- Whether or not there are flexible work style options, attitude to equal opportunities for working women to demonstrate skills and receive promotions, social restrictions on life course selection, state of restrictions due to outmoded ideas and rules, level of tolerance toward children, thoughts on women having jobs, resolution of attitude toward the division of labor based on gender, ease of changing jobs, level of freedom to choose life course, desires for future work and life, possibility and ability to change course, level of importance of spending time with family
(2) Women’s work styles and work-life balance
- Actual/desired amount of time spent with family, work-life balance, time to spare, degree of satisfaction with overall life, degree of satisfaction with job, employment status (current/future desired), occupation, hours spent working per day, commuting time from home to workplace, time respondent gets home, motivation to work, opportunities for women to be promoted
- Ease of working in workplace for people (regardless of gender) rearing children, consciousness to do work efficiency, reasons for being conscious about work efficiency, desired number of working hours and working days
- Marital status, spouse’s employment status, division of labor and ratio of sharing of housework/childrearing
(3) Other
- Region of residence, cohabiting with/living near own parents or spouse’s parents, highest level of educational attainment, overall annual household income, presence of children, hours spent on housework and childrearing per day on average
