Summary Since 2000, Works Institute, Recruit Co., Ltd. has been planning and conducting periodical and multifaceted surveys to understand how employees perceive and comprehend their professional careers, which are constantly changing with the influence of recent social and economic trends. The fifth survey is reported here. It was conducted in an attempt to reveal the perception and understanding of employment among business people working in the Tokyo Metropolitan area.

Universe Employees of private firms and public agencies, including full-time, contract, temporary, and part-time staff, aged between 18 and 59 years and working within a 50-kilometer radius of the Tokyo Metropolitan area (Tokyo Metropolis and the Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, and Ibaraki prefectures), and people who worked for more than a day by the end of July 2008 (excluding students).

Area sampling:
Participants were divided into an employee group and part-timer group, and were assigned to a group by gender and 5-year age group.

The employee group comprises “regular employees and staff.”

The part-timer group comprises “contract workers/employees on a short-term contract (shokutaku),” “dispatched workers (haken shain),” “part-timers” “casual part-time workers (arubaito),” and “outsourcing contractors.”
