Summary This national survey was conducted by the Kyoto University Center for the Promotion of Excellence in Higher Education and the Dentsu Scholarship Foundation. It was intended to help us understand trends in learning and growth among Japanese university students. Pursuant to this objective, we have posed detailed questions on the following: career attitudes and academic work, university lifestyles, and university student learning and growth, as well as the pre-university experiences and familial factors thought to influence these.

Major Survey Items (1) Face items
Establishment type of your university, gender, humanities/science specialization, university of your first choice at the time of college entrance exam and the university currently attending (the level of satisfaction), age, commute from home/commute time, income situation, tuition waver, presence of scholarship, etc.

(2) Reasons for going to college, acquisition of knowledge/skills
Reasons considered most important when deciding to move on to college (before enrolling/now), knowledge and skills/attitude you learned or gained while in college

(3) Weekly schedule, Important points of university life, volunteer activities, internships
How you spend your week (different items), items you prioritized in your college life, degree of fulfillment in your college life, participation in volunteer activities, participation in internships, etc.

(4) Life path guidance in middle/high school
How you spent your three years of high school, how many opportunities did career guidance give you to think about employment and your future life, etc.

(5) Two lives (Future and daily contacts)
Outlook on your future, most important elements of this outlook and the efforts you're making to realize them, level of education you think you can attain, etc.

(6) Participatory classes/practicums
Participation situation in participatory or active classes and practicums and their effect, etc.

(7) Career education/career formulation support, employment counseling, qualifications,
Whether taking courses on career education subjects and their effect on you, attendance to career support center seminars and lectures and their effect on you, status of participation in career formulation or job search support events, experience with individual counseling for the job search/with who/its effect, whether you believe that you will need to obtain qualifications in subjects other than those that you studied in college, etc.

(8) Life plan
Time when you began to think of your future, your work, and your life, presence/absence of a rough plan for life, status of parental involvement, whether or not the university or department to which you are currently affiliated gives you a sense of hope for the future, etc.

(9) Attitudes on job searches and work, thoughts on your household
Time when you will begin looking for a job, expectation of changing jobs within 3 years of starting work, type of employment you will have when looking for a job, how long will you keep your job, the job you find most ideal, nature of work and leisure, thoughts on marriage and life afterward, whether you think you want to meet a lot of people and improve yourself, etc.

(10) Extracurricular community
Presence/absence of an extracurricular community (club, part-time job, etc.)/type, presence/absence of a community where you perform learning activities with friends/objective/connection between your classes and learning, etc.
