| Summary |
This survey was conducted to accurately understand the prevailing situation of the members of the Council of Japan Construction Industry Employees’ Unions (JCU) in terms of working hours, living conditions, and their general perceptions of work and life. By feeding the results back to activities toward the reduction of working hours as promoted by the JCU and its affiliated unions, it aims to contribute to improving the overall working conditions. In November every year, JCU conducts a survey with approximately 10,000 union members to gather information on their working hours. For over 41 years since 1972, this survey has shed light on the work environment in the construction industry, while adapting the content of the questions to suit changes in society. This is the most extensive and consistent survey on white-collar workers in the construction industry. This survey focused on questions relating to “working hours and attractiveness of the construction industry” and “attitudes toward work-life balance,” which have been included in previous years as part of the Questionnaire Survey for the Reduction of Working Hours. Moreover in order to facilitate analysis of attitudes toward working hours, questions were added on topics such as “means of reducing excess working hours,” “means of shortening working hours,” and “what would enable workers to take Saturdays off.” |
