Summary In 2004, the Japan Student Services Organization implemented the “Exemption from Repayment for Graduate School Students with Particularly Outstanding Academic Achievements System,” which enabled the exemption from repayment of all or part of scholarship funds at the end of the allowance period for currently enrolled students with high levels of academic achievement, for up to a maximum of 30 percent of individuals who had received type-1 scholarships in graduate school.

This survey investigated the current situation of individuals who had been certified as exempt from repayment five years prior in order to delineate the activities in society of such individuals and thus verify the effectiveness of the system.
