Summary In 2004, the Japan Student Services Organization implemented the “Exemption from Repayment for Graduate School Students with Particularly Outstanding Academic Achievements System,” which enabled the exemption from repayment of all or part of scholarship funds at the end of the allowance period for currently enrolled students with high levels of academic achievement.

This survey was conducted to delineate the paths of people who were exempted from repayment.

*“Employed” refers to people who are working, regardless of whether they are regular or non-regular employees. Currently enrolled student A refers to students who have finished the course that they received the fees exemption for and are now enrolled in another course or school. Currently enrolled student B refers to students who are continuing study in the same course that they received the repayment exemption for. Not employed refers to people not employed or covered by current enrolled student A or B such as those in post-doctoral positions or individuals who have a doctoral degree but no employment or those who were not able to gain a doctoral degree within the time limit.
