Summary This survey targets households in Shizuoka Prefecture that were receiving one or more of the following public welfare benefits: Livelihood assistance, Housing assistance, Education assistance, or Medical assistance, with the aim of investigating causes of poverty and the formation processes of poverty through an analysis of the lifestyle and occupational history of households receiving support.

The title of the data – "Survey on Formation of Poverty in Shizuoka" – refers to the responses from households residing in the city areas from the "Survey on the Lifestyles of Households Receiving Support," which targeted households in Shizuoka Prefecture that were receiving support and was carried out by the Institute for Science of Labour in 1952 and then processed by the "City Research Group Regarding Distribution and Formation Processes of Poverty Levels" (Official Representative: Shojiro Ujihara) in 1953.
The publicly available data has been restored from the 1,000 questionnaires stored at the University of Tokyo Institute of Social Sciences Library that were part of the original survey forms carried out by the Institute for Science of Labour. The person responsible for the data restoration project was Shinichi Aizawa, Associate Professor, Chukyo University.
