Summary This survey was carried out for the purpose of contributing to the smooth execution of job-hunting and recruitment activities from the next academic year onward by clarifying job-hunting and recruitment selection activity awareness and behavior of students scheduled to graduate from universities in the 2018 academic year.

Mode of Data Collection Self-administered questionnaire: Web-based (CAWI)
Approximately 60 universities throughout Japan were selected, taking into account location, founding entity, scale, etc. Fourth-year undergraduate students and second-year master’s students (early-stage doctoral students) from each university were asked to take part in the survey. Students accessed and responded to the survey questionnaire website, which was made available on the Internet. Students were made aware that medical, pharmaceutical, dentistry, nursing, and veterinary students, as well as international students, were not included in the target group for the survey.

(1) Awareness of and preparation for job hunting
Whether engaging in job hunting, planned path after graduating from university/graduate school, desired industry of future employer, important aspects to consider when choosing an employer, major areas of job hunting

(2) Student awareness of job-hunting period
Level of awareness regarding job-hunting and recruitment period, channels for obtaining information regarding the period change (news media such as television and newspapers, recruitment company), time period of obtaining information, awareness that the period is the same as in the previous year

(3) Details of job-hunting activity (period/status, state of early unofficial job offers)
Activity before the start of promotional/PR activities by companies, period when respondent began analysis of industry and companies, participation in company information meetings and seminars (period (first/last), peak, number of companies), submission of entry sheets (period (first/last), peak, number submitted), situation regarding taking job interviews (period (first/last), peak, number of companies interviewed with), job interview schedule with the company of the first-choice, route to recruitment examinations and interviews, etc., whether respondent has received early unofficial job offers (period, company size, industry, route), timing/company size/industry of the first early unofficial job offer received, start and end period of job-hunting activity, internship experience (whether experienced, number of days, shortest/longest experience, period of participation, influence, etc.)

(4) Relationship between job-hunting activity and academic performance, consideration by companies, etc.
State of securing time for study (in each phase of job-hunting period), whether or not respondent has submitted course history (transcript), timing of submission, selection process emphasizing academic performance (research, seminars, specialized fields, academic efforts, grades, etc.), consideration in setting job-hunting activity schedule and time period, consideration for job-hunting activity in distant locations (U-turns, I-turns, J-turns), job hunting during “cool biz,” effect to a plan to study abroad, etc., consideration for students with experience of studying abroad, effect to scheduled teaching practicum etc., consideration for those undergoing a teaching practicum, harassment and similar behavior (existence of harassment, details, time period, person consulted)
