Summary The Japan Student Services Organization has introduced in 2004 a "repayment exemption system for outstanding performance" that allows up to 30% of the students who received a first-class scholarship loan for graduate studies and have made outstanding academic achievements to be released from repayment obligations for all or half of the loan scholarships at the end of the loan period.

This survey was conducted to examine recipients’ current situation 5 years after obtaining the exemption certification to verify the system’s effect by investigating certified people’s active roles in society.
