Summary A project entitled "Comprehensive Study on the Functions and Structure of the Human Resources Business in Japan," established by the Department of Research on the Staffing Industry, Institute of Social Science, The University of Tokyo, surveyed human resources companies (including those providing job information services through newspapers, magazines, and the Internet; fee-charging employment agencies; worker dispatch services; contracting services; and other related businesses) with the aim of understanding the market and management conditions of the human resources business.
 Based on the results of this survey, we aim to clarify the following three points: (1) the growth and business development of human resources firms, (2) human resources business productivity, and (3) future trends in the human resources business.

Universe Companies engaged in the human resources business
*To select survey respondents, target companies must meet one of the following criteria:.
(1) Member companies of the Japan Human Resource Dispatchers Association
(2) Member companies of the Japan Human Resource Introduction Service Association
(3) Member companies of the National Association of Employment Information
(4) Companies whose main industry is "worker dispatch business or private employment placement," according to the corporate data of Teikoku Databank, Inc.
(5) Companies engaged in the business of contracting and temporary staffing in the manufacturing sector that appeared in an Internet search and are listed on the homepage of the Department of Research on the Staffing Industry, Institute of Social Science, University of Tokyo
(6) Regarding (1)-(4) above, firms considered to be engaged in the human resources business according to an Internet search, excluding (a) firms whose address is unknown, (b) firms judged not to be engaged in the human resources business according to the Internet search results, and (c) firms that were found not to be engaged in the human resources business based on the returned questionnaire
