Summary
|
What do junior high school students, who are beginning their development in terms of their ego and physical growth, worry about, and how do they cope?
In the current information society, junior high school students are caught up in a whirlpool of information. In particular, the number of students who are unable or unwilling to control their emotions has been rising recently, and there is an increasing tendency for students to lag behind in terms of their emotional maturity, which makes them feel younger than they are. Additionally, today's high schools and high school entrance examinations are becoming more diverse, and high school entrance examinations are no longer the final goal of junior high school life but merely a transit point in a long trajectory. What kinds of problems do today's junior high school students face in this situation?
By asking these students to share their anxieties, coping strategies, the advice they get from others, and the hurtful remarks they have received about their body shape, etc., while also examining various angles such as self-image, self-affirmation (i.e., whether they like themselves), and physical condition, this study attempts to clarify the reality of today's junior high school students’ worries and find solutions to them.

Respondent’s participation in extracurricular activities, whether the respondent eats breakfast, activities comprising the respondent’s routine beginning when they wake up in the morning and ending when they leave home to go to school, number of friends the respondent has, activities in which the respondent engages when they are with their friends, respondent’s degree of enjoyment of school, whether the respondent likes themselves
(2) Junior high school students’ worries
Friends’ and family members’ comments about the respondent, respondent’s sources of anxiety in the past year, actions the respondent takes when anxious
(3) Physical problems
Whether the respondent worries about how people perceive them, amount of weight the respondent wants to lose, respondent’s weight loss motivation, respondent’s dieting experiences, frequency at which the respondent weighs themselves, actions the respondent has taken in an attempt to lose weight, respondent’s experiences of being ridiculed (about their body shape such as weight and height, about their appearance, and/or about their personality), respondent’s perception of thin people, whether the respondent wants to be active on TV
