Summary This survey is conducted every three years to provide time-series data to grasp the state of life insurance coverage among ordinary households and their conceptions and knowledge of life insurance as well as to project future trends of the life insurance market.

Major Survey Items Demographic items:
Sex of household head; number of family members; children and last-born child; annual household income; age of household head; education of household head; and type of dwelling.
Questionnaire items:
(1) Head's and household's coverage by private, postal, and agricultural cooperative life insurance schemes (coverage, number of policies held, insurance money [amount paid upon maturity, amount paid upon ordinary death, and amount paid upon death from casualty], annual premiums, method of payment of private insurance premiums, number of private insurers, etc.); (2) private insurance policies held since 1971 (age of head and state of last-born child at the time of purchase, route of purchase, reasons for purchase, purpose of purchase, relations with sales staff, degree of understanding policy details, etc.); (3) feeling of sufficiency with current insurance money, uncovered people's needs for life insurance, and intentions for new/additional private coverage; (4) type of insurance being sought, desired insurance system, and desired method of purchase; (5) feeling about payment of premiums, and affordable amount; (6) cancellation and invalidation, and reasons); (7)sales persons' visits and their posture during sales; (8) knowledge on life insurance, and opinion of and requests for private life insurance in general; (9) price level and life insurance, and degree of anxiety about living after old age and upon emergency as well as necessary reserve funds; (10) means of savings to count on (for emergency, senior life, sickness, and accidents); and (11) income deductions for life insurance premiums.
