Summary The shift to the tertiary industry in the overall industrial structure and the implementation of the Equal Employment Opportunity Law have generated more and more employment opportunities for women, and, coupled by the growth of highly educated women, reduced domestic labor, lower birth rates, these factors have also led to a rapid expansion in women's social participation and desire for learning. Against the backdrop, this survey was conducted in order to clarify changes in the women's life consciousness and the state of contemporary women, specifically from the perspective of "women's independence and improvement in status" -an international theme of the UN Women's Decade. As such this survey takes up a variety of dimensions including sense of independence in human relations as indicated by sense of equality between wife and husband and sense of reliance on children and one's own parents' home, awareness of agency in having social interests and participating in community activities, life consciousness with respect to marriage, divorce, and division of domestic labor, and state of work as indicated by annual income and employment status.
