Summary This survey investigates the current state of corporate welfare and the work environment as well as their problems and wants from the worker's perspective. In doing so, it emphasizes (1)B-group insurance, (2)asset formation, (3)work hours and leisure, (4)the retirement allowance system, and (5)housing policy. The ultimate purpose of the survey is to thereby suggest the way corporate welfare should be in the future to bring a more affluent life to the worker.

A total of 300 localities in the Metropolitan area (within a 30-kilometer radius of Tokyo, and Yokohama City and Chiba City), the Kei-Hanshin area (within a 20-kilometer radius of Osaka, and Kyoto City and Kobe City), Sapporo City, Sendai City, Nagoya City, Hiroshima City, Kita-Kyushu City, and Fukuoka City. (Seven responses were expected from each locality.)

Sex; age; marital status and children; occupation; industry; foreign-owned or not; size of full-time workforce; last school attended; annual income; composition of family members living with Respondent; spouse's occupation; annual household income; and value of financial assets (excluding real estate).
Questionnaire items:
(1) Worker's life consciousness (recognition of changes in work environment; worry about life before retirement; worry about life after retirement; ideas on employment [work or home, desire to get ahead, willingness to work, meritocracy or seniority, view of life-time employment, desire for job switching, job switching experienced and reasons]).
(2) Evaluation of life at company (dissatisfaction; degree of satisfaction with company; degree of satisfaction with company welfare; overworked or not).
(3) Work hours and holidays (transference and living separate from family for business; hours worked; better wages or shorter hours; barriers to shorter hours; way to realize shorter hours; form of holidays taken; portion of entitled paid vacation taken and reasons for not taking it all; portion of entitled long vacation taken and taking pattern; type of vacation desired from company; systems related to childraising and nursing care).
(4) B-group insurance (state of coverage; insurance money; reasons for coverage; reasons for being uncovered; view of preparing security against death; requests; life-protecting measures needed from company).
(5) Asset-forming support (state of withholding system); employees' savings system (used or not used; reasons for not using; requests for improvement; intention for future use; evaluation; view of savings; requests to company); state of ESOP and in-house deposit system.
(6) Housing policy (type of dwelling; commuting time; housing policy and housing expenses; sense of burden; intentions for living in company or rent house/apartment; intentions for homeownership; housing policy and idea desired from company; consciousness on housing among people living in houses/apartments not owned by themselves).
(7) Life after retirement (mandatory retirement system; retirement age; living expenses after retirement; requests on public pension plan; state of retirement allowance system [form of payment, planned use, pension or lump sum payment, reasons for the choice, and requests]; intentions for employment after retirement and reasons; consciousness on early-retirement; reemployment and postponed retirement; retirement preparation programs implemented and desired).
