| Summary | This survey was conducted in order to study the disparity between an ideal image of life among contemporary women and the reality in the midst of such socio-environmental changes as women's social and educational advancement, aging of society, transformation of the family, advanced information, shift to a service economy, declining birth rate, and prolonged timing of marriage. The questionnaire survey classifies women's life into the three dimensions of "work for pay," "marriage," and "childbearing and childraising" to identify their ideal image of life in each dimension, and successfully curves out gaps between the image and reality. |

Demographic items: Age; last school attended; family members living with Respondent; annual income; annual household income; type of dwelling; housing loan obligations; intention for home ownership; parents alive or dead; and number of siblings. Questionnaire items: (1) Life as a whole: comfort in life and degree of satisfaction with life; degree of satisfaction with life as a whole; areas of dissatisfaction with current life; comport in life; and joys and reasons for life); best allocation of time (hours at present; ideal hours; and areas demanding more time); ideal life course (ideal and reality of life course; and undesirable work periods); security and design of life (awareness on savings and consumption; kind of funds desired for future preparation; life insurance coverage; and future preparation of security of life. (2) Work: work consciousness; ideal and reality of working women (work status and degree of satisfaction with work; reasons for working; hours worked; barriers against continued work; income use; ideal income use; matters of importance upon working; intention for future work; and form of work desired); work intention among and form of work desired by women without a paid job; and requests to the state and local governments. (3) Marriage: awareness on marriage (view of marriage; and what is gained and lost in marriage); postponed marriage timing (age to marry at); married women's image of wife and husband (awareness on family life; leadership in family; leisure and holiday activities; attitudes to housekeeping, and husband's participation in housekeeping; and ties with parents); and unmarried women's view of marriage (ideal age to marry at; intention for marriage and reasons for being unmarried; and ideal image of married couple). (4) Childbearing and childraising: awareness on childbearing and childraising; declined birth rate (ideal number of children; and reasons for not wanting "at least two children"); and husband's participation in childraising. |
