Summary The Japanese today spend more time before marriage, produce less children, see more women outside home, act more as individuals, and live longer in the advanced information society. This survey was conducted against the backdrop of such social changes in order to grasp the life consciousness and behavior of contemporary husbands and wives and to explore future trends of the life style of married couples. In doing so, the survey centers on the issues of husband-wife communication, role division, and decision-making, and attempts to uncover gender gaps as well as gaps between reality and intention in these dimensions of everyday life. The survey also investigates what role communication plays for the contemporary married couple.
