Summary Since 1963 we have conducted an annual survey in October for the purpose of realizing a fuller campus life by clarifying, in particular, the economic life of university students as well as their consciousness and activities, and by making the findings reflect on our business and various activities. This 1997 survey, the 33rd of the kind, was carried out when the student life has entered an extremely difficult situation, reflecting an unstable economic climate characterized not only by a prolonged recession but also by the bankruptcy of big firms and banks. Furthermore, employment anxieties are shared by more and more freshmen/ women and sophomores due to the abolishment of the "shushoku kyotei" custom, or the gentlemen's agreement to set a timetable for job-seeking students. The survey demonstrates how, under such circumstances, the students are trying their best to polish themselves in various moments in student life in preparation for the day they start a career life.
