| Summary |
The “Fact-finding Survey on Student Life” has been conducted every October since 1963 with the objective of clarifying the state of university students’ lifestyles, especially, financial life, and the views and behavior of university students, to enhance the lives of university students through the implementation of the results in the activities and operations of university co-operatives. The 2012 survey is the 48th survey. This time, in addition to question items posed in previous surveys (lifestyle expenses, consumer behavior, etc.), we have also included question items intended to clarify the actual state of the lives of university students, who are often considered “academically challenged” or “introverted,” by asking them about their study time per week, desire to engage in corporate life after graduating, and preferred work style after finding a job. Additionally, reductions in allowances and remittances provided by parents continue to be seen, and as many university students search for part-time jobs and scholarships to fund their income, we have found through this survey that many university students nevertheless find this sort of lifestyle “fun,” and that it probably will not change much in the future. Further, while it can be said that the job market has begun to revive in the last few years, the nature of the student fears regarding the future has also changed in response. |

(1) Attributes -Major, year in school, age, gender, marital status, type of examination taken to enter the university currently attending, type of current residence/size/presence of kitchen and bath, mode of transportation to commute to school, commuting time (2) University life -University life: number of days per week attending university, time of arriving at and leaving from university, number of classes attended, whether respondent likes university, fullness of student life, important aspects of university life, reason for going to college, whether the current university was the respondent’s first choice, reason for choosing the current university -Employment: planned pathway after completing undergraduate studies, worries regarding employment and details of such, initiatives to find work in desired occupation/job type, decision with respect to desired occupation/job type, changing jobs, plans for early retirement (3) Daily life -whether the respondent has been admitted to hospital or been an outpatient in the last six months, days as inpatient/number of visits as outpatient, time when accident or injury occurred, time spent studying per week, average time spent reading per day, association with student club activities, regarding meals (location, content, purchase expenses), worries regarding daily life, people to confide in, life motivation after graduating from university (4) Consumption behavior -Whether respondent has a smartphone/time of purchase/plan to get one -Whether respondent has a driver’s license/when respondent got (plans to get) driver’s license/how respondent applied (or plan to apply) to a driving school (5) Economic life - Current living conditions, future outlook, measures taken with respect to future income, areas to conserve/increase spending, receipt and use of scholarship funds, current part-time (arubaito) job, part-time (arubaito) work experience in the last six months/income/main purpose of spending income, living expenses for one month, use of “meal card,” etc., special expenses (amount spent in last six months/expected future expenses), occupation and annual income of father and mother (6) Co-ops - Usage and evaluation of co-op books division, Co-op retail division, and Co-op cafeteria, awareness regarding various Co-op activities, whether Co-op is familiar, level of satisfaction with and enjoyment of Co-op *For details of survey items, please refer to the questionnaire. |
