Summary This is an online survey conducted to measure society's tolerance for suicide and to analyze the connection with factors that determine such attitudes.
The major survey items are:
(1) Trust, views on life and death, and suicide tolerance
(2) Details of suicide prevention
(3) Details of suicide-related experiences
(4) Details of the relationship with neighbors

This survey was conducted as part of the 2013 Health and Labor Science Special Research Project titled "International and Interdisciplinary Study for Suicide Countermeasures Development Based on Revised Outline of Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Policies" (H25-Special-Designated-027) (Representative researcher: Hiroe Tsubaki (Institute of Statistical Mathematics)).

According to the "Communications Usage Trend Survey 2012" conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the internet usage rate varies according to the generation and tends to decrease among older users. Therefore, as the representativeness in online surveys is largely lost above a certain age, it was decided to limit this survey to a population aged between 20 and 59 years. It is important to note that with this condition, this survey does not consider the entire Japanese society in its population as the seniors were not included among the respondents.

With a target of 1,000 people, the samples were allocated proportionally to the five-year age groups and gender of the interpolated and corrected population according to the Statistics Bureau of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications as of February 1, 2014 (approximate value based on the population of the 2010 census).

Then, an online survey based on this distribution was sought from Macromill, Inc. This company normally excludes workers of the "survey/advertisement" fields from its surveys, but for this occasion, it was decided not to exclude any industry.

Anticipating a certain percentage of invalid samples, Macromill delivered a number of samples that corresponded to more than 103% of the request, which resulted in a higher number of responses than the samples ordered. The data check indicated no need to invalidate any sample or the presence a significant gap in the composition ratio of the five-year age groups or gender between the interpolated and corrected population and the samples collected. Therefore, all the samples were included in the analysis.
