| Summary | This survey is part of our effort to chronologically grasp the state of people's awareness about security of life and preparation of such security as they change as the socio-economic environment changes. In 1987 we began an annual survey entitled the "Individual Survey on Security of Life and Life Insurance," which lasted for five years. In 1993, we revised it to a new survey series entitled the "Survey on Individual Life and Life Insurance." This 1998 survey is the eighth of the entire surveys done since 1987, and offers the richest content ever-with such modifications as the introduction of new sets of questions regarding awareness about the public security system and the actual state of nursing care. |

Demographic items: Sex, age, occupation, size of firm's workforce, annual income, marital status, number of children, children's life stage, family members living together, spouse's occupation, household's annual income, type of dwelling, and financial assets. Questionnaire items: I Life planning and consciousness on security of life: Current living circumstances; living circumstances a few years from now; reasons for getting worse; availability of life plan; period planned; areas of economic preparation emphasized by household; and view of private preparation of security of life. II Medical security: Worry about injury and illness; hospitalization in the past year; hospitalization expenses paid individually in the past year; level of interest in, recognition of, and view of public medical insurance; evaluation of public premiums, benefits, mandatory coverage, and equity; fuller public guarantee v.s. self-help efforts; state of private preparation, sense of sufficiency, and intention for further preparation; and means of funding hospitalization expenses. III Security of senior life: Worry about life after aging; living standard in senior life; minimum living expenses in senior life; amount added for comfort and its use; level of interest in, recognition of, and view of public pension plan; evaluation of public pension contributions, benefits, mandatory coverage, and equity; fuller public guarantee v.s. self-help efforts; state of private preparation, sense of sufficiency, and intention for further preparation; age for starting to use old-age funds; and means of funding senior life. IV Security of nursing care: Worry about Respondent's own care; experience of care; persons cared; condition of care; period of care; place of care; in-house care services used; in-house care services Respondent wants to use; desired place of own care; form of own in-house care; reasons for preferring in-house care; reasons for preferring institutional care; level of interest in, recognition of, and view of public care insurance; evaluation of public care contributions, benefits, mandatory coverage, and equity; fuller public guarantee v.s. self-help efforts; state of private preparation, sense of sufficiency, and intention for further preparation; and means of funding care. V Security after death: Worry about life of survived family; view of public guarantee after death; and state of private preparation, sense of sufficiency, and intention for further preparation. VI Security of life and life insurance: Top-priority area of preparation; and second-priority area of preparation. The state of coverage as self-reported: institutions; type (individual pension insurance or life insurance); amount of pension and period of receipt; insurance money for ordinary death; annual amount of premiums paid; and daily amount of sickness hospitalization benefits. |
