Summary Our country has seen the time of a structural adjustment towards the 21st century, and the society and the economic environment which surrounds companies and employees are changing a lot. It is thought that such a change has big influence also on the employment management side of companies, and changes are expected toward a rise of needs to various talented people, personnel treatment and wages based on the principle of capability and performance, diversification of career formation, and consideration of individuality.This survey explored the issues accompanying the plan of future personnel management and the whereabouts and change of a Japanese employment custom in companies. It was carried out for companies and employees, for the purpose of utilizing for labor administration.

[Survey of companies] From 41,503 companies met to survey criteria, 4,000 companies were extracted by type of industry and company scale.
[Survey of employees] From 51,755 places of work met to survey criteria, 2,000 were extracted by type of industry. Questionnaires were distributed to 10 employees of each place.
Mode of Data Collection Questionnaires were mailed (distribution to employees were done via each place-of-business personnel person-in-charge course, and return was individually performed by mailing).
Investigator The Japan Institute of Labor. Actual investigation were done by SRIC Corporation.

Present and future condition of a lifetime employment custom, employee adoption policy of the future, how to deal with promotion of employees who entered company synchronously (former and future), introductory intention of new personal affair system, how to do work (individually independent or cooperative as organizations), problems on a salary system, change of a salary system, prospect of seniority wage systems, reason of adopting seniority wage system, hiring of full-time employees at the time of performance aggravation, cycle of staff reassignment, width of managerial position`s career, temporary transfer system (existence, number of workers, purpose of temporary transfers, problem on temporary transfers).
Face sheet: established year, type of industry, number of full-time employees and the composition, number of full-time employees - 5 years ago & 5 years later.

Questionnaire items:
Occupational description, desirable work, way of work and way of life, promotion, view of promotion of employees who entered company synchronously, view of performance-based wage system, transfer / change-of-occupation experience, change-of-occupation intention, lifetime employment, recognition about life as a worker, prospect about future life, annual paid vacation system.
Face sheet: sex, age class, length of employed, last school education, place of work, type of industry, company scale.
