Summary Many measures are being promoted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology on collaboration between businesses and universities, and various survey studies have been conducted. However, many of these past studies were aimed at large companies and relatively large-scale small- and medium-sized companies, mainly dealing with collaboration in technology research and product development. Therefore, here, we will administer a questionnaire for small companies that have done business with Japan Finance Corporation (JFC) and determine the overall picture of cooperation by small companies with universities from the two perspectives of utilization of universities and cooperation with universities.

 In this survey, “university” includes universities, junior colleges, and colleges of technology.
 “Collaboration with universities” is divided into “university utilization” and “collaboration with universities” and further divided into three items.
 <University utilization>
”Development planning” --- product/service joint development and planning consultation
”Evaluation outsourcing” --- product/service evaluation outsourcing
”Management consultation” --- consultation on business management (marketing/market development, etc.)
 <Collaboration with universities>
”Offering lectures” --- offering in-class lectures and open lectures
”Research collaboration”--- collaboration in classroom and research activity (non-lecture)
”Internships” --- accepting interns

 Furthermore, interviewed were also conducted with companies, universities, and intermediaries

- University utilization (development planning/evaluation outsourcing/management consultation) -- performance, degree of satisfaction with utilization, proposing utilization, utilization contacts, utilization problems, utilization effects, future utilization intention

- Collaboration with universities (offering lectures/research collaboration/internship) --- performance, degree of satisfaction with collaboration, contact through which collaboration was proposed, reasons for collaboration, collaboration problems, collaboration effects, future collaboration intention

(4) General collaboration with universities
Reasons small-scale companies are not actively collaborating, things necessary to promote collaboration, desired information about collaboration, easy-to-use intermediaries, changes in collaboration frequency (respondent’s company/neighboring companies in the same trade)

(5) Relationship with local universities
Number of employees, merits of having local universities, traveling time to the nearest university (humanities/sciences), how traveling time affect collaboration

(6) State of management
State of profits, state of sales, monthly sales, future business scale intention, relationship with universities at the time of opening the business
